Sucess Story |
Annual Turnover -Rs. 2500,000/- (Twenty Five Lacs)
Situation /Background
Sheikh Khalid, a 29-year-old graduate from Shelipora, Achabal, Anantnag, is a progressive apple grower who has transformed his ancestral 25 kanals of land into a modern and sustainable high-density orchard. His journey toward innovative farming began after attending training programs at KVK-Anantnag under the Skill Training of Rural Youth (STRY) program and the NABARD-assisted project on apple rootstock multiplication.
Implementation
Over the past 4-5 years, Khalid systematically replaced his traditional orchards with high-density plantations. He implemented advanced techniques, such as crop load management, integrated pest management (IPM), and efficient irrigation systems, resulting in higher yields and improved fruit quality. He remained in consistent touch with the scientists of KVK-Anantnag for updated knowledge and skill up-gradation on various aspects of fruit production, ensuring that his orchard practices aligned with the latest innovations and standards in the field.
Problems & Challenges
Khalid initially faced challenges common to traditional orchard systems, including low productivity, pest infestations and fluctuating market demands. Lack of exposure to modern high-density orchard systems and sustainable farming techniques were barriers to maximizing the economic potential of his land.
Name of the Government schemes
Sheikh Khalid benefitted from multiple government schemes, including:
The High-Density Plantation Scheme, which offered support for transitioning to modern orchard systems, including subsidies and technical support for planting material and infrastructure.
Solution
KVK-Anantnag provided intensive training and mentorship to Sheikh Khalid, enabling him to acquire expertise in raising high-density orchards on clonal rootstocks. The knowledge gained helped him adopt sustainable practices, modern canopy management and advanced irrigation and fertigation systems to enhance productivity.
Outcome
This year, Khalid achieved an annual turnover of ₹25 lakh, with significant portions of his newly established orchards yet to enter commercial bearing. His 5-year-old high-density orchard recorded an exceptional yield of 72 MT/ha, a benchmark for productivity in the region. Khalid's success story has inspired many local farmers to consider transitioning to modern orchard systems.
Awards/Recognition
While Sheikh Khalid has not received formal awards, he is widely recognized as a progressive young farmer whose expertise and innovative practices have brought financial success within a short time. His achievements have positioned him as a role model for aspiring orchardists in South Kashmir. In recognition of his skills and knowledge, KVK-Anantnag has designated him as a Master Trainer, enabling him to mentor and inspire other farmers in the region.
